Zoraida's greatest joy comes through the companionship of her daughters. Wherever she goes, she takes them with her, whether it is to market to sell pottery and knitting, or to masjid for prayers. Filled with self-reproach and dishonor, she withdrew emotionally from Kader for fear he surely was disappointed. Her actions toward him, as a result, have become somewhat perfunctory. She does what's expected of her, and is obedient in all things, but in place of love there is only a desire to avoid his contempt
