Caitlin's world revolves around her long-term boyfriend Mark, who she started dating four years ago, just weeks after her parents' death. She wanted to feel loved and cared about, and he was just what the doctor ordered. Problem was, after the first few months of I Love You's wore off, Mark became an all-around jerk. He's a selfish good-for-nothing, who spends his paychecks on beer and his newest habit: cigarettes. Though Caitlin sees this downward spiral, she's too dependent on his company to end the relationship. She's afraid of being alone, and she wants the security of knowing she'll always have someone. So she lets his verbal abuse roll off her back, and she looks the other way when Mark physically abuses Hayden. She tries to make herself believe everything will be better once Mark finds a good-paying job, and once they're married. She's also burnt out from having raised Hayden during his rough teenaged years. The two don't always get along; in fact, every conversation between them seems to be an argument. Caitlin doesn't always feel that Hayden appreciates the fact that she works 40+ hours to keep a roof over their head, and food in their fridge. She can be bossy (she'd wish he'd get a job or do more chores around the house), but deep down inside, wishes they had a better relationship, and that they could work out their lives together, with Mark out of the picture.
