Life has been absolutely wonderful! My one year wedding anniversary is coming up, and I am so excited! People always say the first year is when you start to feel the growing pains and start second-guessing your relationship. But that's not how it's been at all! Tiernan is as wonderful and amazing as ever, and I feel like I'm daily growing closer with him. We're even planning a sort of "honeymoon" for our anniversary. We're doing a destination trip to Ireland, visiting different spots, especially Killarney. I'm so excited. I love him so much. He's so gentle and kind, and has a big heart for the things I'm passionate about, i.e. animal care right now. He supports my volunteer work with the animal sanctuary here in Highland Oaks, and even adopted a beautiful Arabian horse I had my eyes set on for a while now. It was a surprise birthday present!! I asked him about it, but I didn't know if he'd actually get her for me. But he did!! And she's GORGEOUS. I decided to name her Athena. She's still under the weather right now. She has a skin disease that I have a vet looking at, and she's emaciated. But in just a few months, I know she'll look like a champion. I'm glad to be with her every step of the way.
Working at the animal sanctuary can be heartbreaking sometime. It's at least a no-kill center, but it's sad to see the situations these animals are coming from. Once a week, I volunteer to do pick up, which means I drive the sanctuary van down to the city shelters, and pick up dogs that our adoption agents have tagged. The founder of Noah's Ark (the sanctuary) has a penchat for mistreated and unwanted animals, the one she knows no one will give a second look to. So I usually pick up pitbulls freed from dog fighting rings, who have scars all over their bodies. I pick up emaciated mothers who've just given birth to 10 puppies and just want to rest. I pick up heartworm-positive senior citizens, puppies with disabilities, and adults with behavior problems. It's so sad to think that even though we take in an average of 10-20 dogs a week, there are still dozens upon dozens of dogs being put to sleep in shelters. Sometimes, I just cry while I'm driving back to the sanctuary.
I've been seriously considering starting my own rescue, to help with the pet overpopulation. Rhett's a lawyer, so he could help with the Articles of Incorporation and with the By-Law's. Then, I can work with a small business development center to find fundraisers and community organizers. I could raise money for start-up, and find foster families until I'm able to afford buying land and building a shelter. Even if I'm only taking in five dogs at the beginning, those are still five dogs that will be able to enjoy life and be placed in forever homes. It's worth a shot. Maybe I can talk to Tiernan about it later...
